Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard agreed to a contract extension reported at two years and $44.2 million, with a mutual option covering a third season, the Boston Herald reported on October 14. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the deal on October 13, and Pritchard appeared to confirm it by posting the report to his Instagram account.
The team had not formally announced the agreement when head coach Joe Mazzulla met with reporters before Boston's preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets at TD Garden on October 14. Mazzulla declined to discuss the contract but praised the 28-year-old, saying he is among the first players who come to mind when people picture a Celtic.
Pritchard, listed at 6-foot-1, averaged 17.0 points per game last season, third on the team behind Jaylen Brown, after moving from the starting lineup back to a reserve role when Boston traded Anfernee Simons at the deadline. He is a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year and was part of the franchise's championship roster.
He is the fourth Celtics player extended since the end of last season, after center Neemias Queta at four years and $56 million, Jordan Walsh at three years and $15 million, and Ron Harper Jr. at three years and $9 million.
