New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel successfully challenged a third-quarter ruling on November 1 at Hard Rock Stadium, turning an incompletion into a touchdown that keyed a 24-19 win over the Miami Dolphins, the Boston Globe reported.
Quarterback Drake Maye threw deep to wide receiver Kyle Williams, who shed a tackle near the Miami 5-yard line and reached the end zone, though his knee jarred the ball loose. Officials initially ruled the pass incomplete with the Patriots down 13-3. Vrabel waited for a replay assist, then threw his challenge flag far downfield. Mark Butterworth, the NFL's vice president of instant replay, said in a pool report that Williams had scored before losing possession, and the call was reversed.
Vrabel, who was fined $250,000 for his conduct toward officials, said he was more sure of the result than the officiating crew had been.
The Patriots added two more touchdowns after the reversal. DeMario Douglas, held without a catch in the first half, finished with three receptions for 76 yards and a 48-yard score. Maye threw for 199 yards.
Tight end Hunter Henry left in the second quarter with a foot injury. Mack Hollins is eligible to come off injured reserve before the November 8 home game against the Green Bay Packers; Romeo Doubs could return as soon as November 29 against the Chargers.
