At Least 442 Mass. Biotech Jobs Cut In Third Quarter

Seven life sciences companies shed Massachusetts workers, and the total may be higher as Boston Scientific and GSK have not detailed local impacts.

At least 442 Massachusetts biotechnology workers were laid off during the third quarter in cuts at seven life sciences companies, NBC Boston reported on October 7.

That count may not capture the full scope of the reductions. Several large employers in the state have announced restructuring plans without specifying how many Massachusetts jobs are affected, according to the report. They include Boston Scientific, described by NBC Boston as the second-largest medical device company in Massachusetts, and GSK, the British drugmaker, which has more than 1,000 workers in the state.

Because those companies have not disclosed local figures, the actual number of life sciences job losses in Massachusetts for the quarter is likely higher than 442, NBC Boston reported.

This story was first reported by NBC Boston.
