New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed 26 of 34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on October 11, a second straight victory that followed a wave of calls for his benching, according to The Boston Globe.

Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy wrote that the criticism of Maye after a 35-6 loss in Jacksonville, which left the team at 1-2 with six interceptions and a lost fumble on his record, was out of proportion for a 24-year-old who reached the Super Bowl in February and finished runner-up in NFL Most Valuable Player voting.

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason said on WEEI that he would sit Maye for a week, and Terry Bradshaw said on Fox before the Buffalo game that he would consider a temporary benching, the Globe reported. Maye was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing three touchdowns against the Bills.

Coach Mike Vrabel, asked about the doubts on October 12, said, "We're all in the judgement business and we understand what this is." Linebacker Robert Spillane said Maye's confidence had returned.

This story was first reported by The Boston Globe.
