Federal Murder Trial of Ex-Stoughton Officer Matthew Farwell Opens

Prosecutors say he killed Sandra Birchmore, a former teen cadet, to hide their relationship, while the defense argues she died by suicide.

By James Okafor

A federal murder trial opened on October 9 for Matthew Farwell, who served as a police officer in Stoughton, Massachusetts, CBS Boston reported. Lawyers delivered opening statements that day.

Farwell is charged in the death of Sandra Birchmore, a onetime teen cadet, and of her unborn child. The government also alleges he arranged the scene to look like a suicide.

Prosecutors say Farwell wanted to keep their relationship hidden. His defense lawyers say Birchmore took her own life after that relationship ended, CBS Boston reported.
