Vermont has the highest ratio of public electric-vehicle chargers to population of any state, with roughly 450 residents for every charger, according to an iSeeCars analysis published on October 31, 2026 and reported by SlashGear on Yahoo Autos. The state narrowly beat California on that measure, the analysis found.
Massachusetts ranked among the five states with the largest number of public charging ports, alongside California, New York, Florida and Texas. Each of the five has more than 13,000 ports available. California leads the national count with close to 82,000, more than triple New York's roughly 24,500.
Boston was listed among the metro areas where drivers have the least difficulty finding a public charger, with San Diego, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco. San Francisco topped the metro rankings at 334 residents per charger. Louisville, Kentucky, finished last among the 50 largest metros at 2,904 residents per charger and had the smallest total, 621.
iSeeCars built the rankings from charging-port counts published by the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center, covering slower home-style public units and faster direct-current stations. The firm projected that more than 40,000 ports would be added nationally during 2026, lifting the total to about 299,800.
