Rhode Island has sued Meta, accusing the social media company of allowing fraudulent advertisements to spread across its platforms and of profiting from them, WPRI reported on October 27, 2026.
The lawsuit alleges that Meta facilitated the proliferation of scam ads, misled users about the strength of its anti-fraud efforts, and collected revenue from the deceptive advertising, according to WPRI. The station described Rhode Island as the first state in the country to bring such a case against the company.
Meta owns Facebook and Instagram, among other platforms. The report did not detail the damages or penalties the state is seeking.
