The U.S. Postal Service said on October 23 that it will extend the lease on the Fields Corner post office in Dorchester through April 27, 2027, three days before the branch was due to shut temporarily with no set reopening date, Boston.com reported.
The city's Office of Neighborhood Services said the agency hopes to reach a longer-term agreement for the site, and that Mayor Michelle Wu plans to press for one.
The reversal follows weeks of pressure from elected officials over a string of Boston-area closures. Rep. Ayanna Pressley said she was "glad" the agency was heeding calls from local leaders, and renewed her demand that USPS reopen the Allston branch. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and Reps. Katherine Clark, Stephen Lynch and Pressley signed a letter to Postmaster General David Steiner asking the agency to halt closures in Massachusetts.
The Allston office at 47 Harvard Ave. has been closed since December 2019 for structural work, with customers directed to Brighton. A developer, Eden Properties, proposed in 2023 to include postal space in a housing project there, but USPS withdrew in April. The agency is also weighing a permanent closure in Watertown.
Markey said USPS earlier reversed a planned closure in Shutesbury.
