Cardinal Exteriors, a family-owned exterior-remodeling company in Portland, Maine, is run by two partners, Mike McCullum and Bob Milliken, according to its website, which lists siding, windows, roofing and deck installation as its core work across Cumberland County, an area the site lists as 38 Maine towns spanning the Lakes Region, Saco Bay, the Kennebunks and Bath.

Four lines of exterior work

On siding, the company's material options include James Hardie fiber cement, vinyl, cedar and composite, each installed alongside new wrap, flashing and trim, the website says. Its window line draws from Andersen, Marvin, Pella and Integrity, with bay and picture styles among the configurations offered. Roof jobs are built around architectural asphalt shingles or metal, each going on after a full tear-off, and new decks are built in composite, PVC, pressure-treated lumber or cedar, which the company describes as new construction and full rebuilds rather than repair work.

Why the hidden layers matter

Cardinal Exteriors walks through its re-siding process in detail: the old cladding comes off first, crews check and fix any soft sheathing underneath, a fresh moisture barrier and flashing go in around doors and windows, and the new siding and trim go on last as a single assembly. A furring-strip gap behind the siding, the company says, gives trapped moisture room to dry rather than sit against the wall, something it flags as most useful on walls facing north or the coast. For houses built before 1978, the company says its crews follow federal rules for handling lead paint any time siding, trim or window work disturbs a painted surface.

Pricing starts with a visit from an owner

The company credits its two partners with more than 20 years of combined experience, and says every proposal begins with a free site visit from an owner, who measures the job and returns a fixed price before any work is scheduled. Among the towns it lists, Cardinal Exteriors separates out coastal communities such as Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth and Yarmouth, which it says are exposed to salt air and wind, from inland towns including Windham, Gorham and the Sebago Lakes area, which it says take on heavier snow.
