Carden Kennels, a pet boarding, daycare and grooming company based in Bangor, Maine, says on its website that it has operated since 2013 and now also runs a second facility, The Uncommon Dog, in nearby Holden. Janet, the owner, is credited on the site with two decades spent working directly in animal behavior and care.

Lodging tiers and daytime play

Across the two locations, the company offers several grades of overnight stay, from what it calls Classic Boarding up through a Deluxe tier with upgraded bedding, plus Family Rooms, Suites, and a Cuddle Care Loft set aside for older dogs needing a quieter space. A daycare program runs on weekdays and groups dogs for supervised play once each one has passed a temperament check. Cats and other small pets stay in separate, calmer quarters the website calls vertical condos, and the grooming side covers baths, nail trims, and full grooms suited to a dog's coat and size.

Standards behind the certification

The website says its day-to-day practices follow standards set through the International Boarding & Pet Services Association, backed by further training that covers behavior work, running a facility, and health and safety protocols. Every employee completes Pet First Aid and CPR training, the site says, and dogs are evaluated individually so that play groups are matched for temperament before a daycare visit begins.

Where the rankings landed

Carden Kennels' website points to the Downeast Dog News Readers' Poll, which in 2025 placed The Uncommon Dog first and Carden Kennels second among Maine's best daycare and boarding operations, then shifted in 2026 to second for The Uncommon Dog and third for Carden Kennels in that same category. For best groomer, the poll put Carden Kennels second in 2025 and tied for third in 2026. The Bangor location sits at 880 Ohio St., while The Uncommon Dog operates from 127 Main Rd. in Holden, according to the website.
