Charter captain Jamie Savage and his customer, Brandon McGirl, caught a 1,116-pound bluefin tuna off Rye Harbor, New Hampshire, aboard Savage's boat, Out Of Line.

The pair left Rye Harbor in the evening and were about 10 miles offshore by midnight, fishing with squid for bait, when the tuna struck a line. Savage said the fish ran for about a mile in the first 20 minutes of the fight before they began reeling it back in, with McGirl pulling in roughly 800 yards of line by hand. After bringing the fish alongside the boat, Savage and McGirl realized it was too large to haul aboard and instead towed it to the Rye Harbor fish pier, where a hoist was used to lift it from the water.

A scale the next morning put the fish's weight at 1,116 pounds; it measured 114 inches. The catch exceeded the previous New Hampshire state record, but it does not qualify for official recognition because it was caught too far offshore. The tuna was iced and taken to a wholesaler to be cut into portions and sold for consumption.

"That's been pretty fun," Savage said of the attention the catch has drawn.
